The Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools is committed to supporting the education of every child by developing community partnerships and advocating for Madison’s public schools. Westminster is a long-time partner in their Adopt-a-School program with Thoreau Elementary.
    • About 50% of Thoreau’s students qualify for free or reduced fee lunches, and many do not have nutritious meals over the weekends. Led by Westminster, many Adopt-a-School partners are providing four nutritious weekend meals for initially 50, and in year three 100, students during the school year. The partners have committed $30,000 for the first three-year program. In addition, Westminster is providing
    • full funding and books for three years for the Thoreau Summer Reading Program, which prevents “summer slide” and keeps students learning and advancing year-round – the cost is about $5,000/year;
    • cold weather clothing and backpacks for students, and turkey’s for Thanksgiving;
    • interaction and encouragement to students, such as serving as Pen Pals and being interviewed by second grade students for a class project;
    • more than 700 donated school supply items (composition books and notebooks, crayon, marker and pencil sets, glue sticks and erasers, etc.) for students that cannot afford them; and
    • direct monetary support to the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), used if a family becomes homeless, or cab rides for family emergencies, and paying for field trips and school yearbooks for families that cannot afford them.
